The birthplace of Maxim Gorky was known as Gorky during Soviet times. As a prime trade centre in the Russian Empire it was known as the 'Purse of Russia'. Elegant buildings today dot the charming city.

This old city at the confluence of rivers Volga and Oka is a popular river tourism centre and an educational hub. The sixth-largest city in Russia is located about 440 km east of Moscow.
